Imaging Isn’t Just Equipment: Inside IMV imaging’s Human-Centred Approach to Veterinary Diagnostics
For many veterinary teams, diagnostic imaging can feel intimidating. The machines are powerful, the expectations are high, and confidence doesn’t always keep pace with responsibility. Yet imaging sits at the very heart of modern veterinary care, shaping diagnoses, guiding treatment, and ultimately influencing outcomes for patients and clients alike.
“After sitting down with the IMV imaging team, it was obvious: their focus isn’t on the machines themselves, but on helping people get the most out of them.”
Beyond the box in the corner
“People often think IMV imaging is just about selling imaging machines,” explains Marie Lyons-Wake, Account Manager at IMV imaging. “But that’s only one part of what we do. We see ourselves as long-term imaging partners.”
Rather than starting with a product, IMV imaging starts with a question: What are you trying to achieve clinically, and what does success look like for your practice?
That mindset shapes everything. From workflow and education to image management and audit support, IMV imaging works alongside practices to build imaging systems that actually fit the realities of veterinary life, across practices of all sizes, species, and levels of experience.
It’s a holistic approach that surprises many. IMV imaging doesn’t just supply equipment; they deliver education, develop bespoke solutions in-house when gaps exist, and help teams maximise the value of what they already have.
Confidence: the hidden barrier in imaging
One of the biggest challenges facing veterinary imaging today isn’t technology; it’s confidence.
“Confidence varies hugely,” says Sam Mauchlen, Clinical & Applications Team Manager. “And it’s one of the biggest barriers to people using imaging equipment effectively or sometimes at all.”
Unlike human medicine, where specialists may perform the same scan hundreds of times before being deemed competent, veterinary professionals are often expected to pick up imaging equipment early in their careers and apply it across multiple species and scenarios.
That gap can be daunting.
“You graduate as a multi-disciplinary professional, surgeon, medic, diagnostician, and suddenly you’re handed an ultrasound probe and expected to just know how to use it,” adds Amy Haylock, part of IMV imaging’s clinical education team. “If that confidence isn’t supported early on, people can develop an aversion to imaging altogether.”
IMV imaging’s solution is simple, but powerful: education that meets people where they are. Teaching people how to drive their machine to optimise images, allowing them to seamlessly generate diagnostic-quality images and interpret the results confidently.
Imaging is a team sport
Another recurring theme from the IMV imaging team is that imaging should never sit with just one person in a practice.
“A whole-practice approach is where real success happens,” Sam explains. “Reception, nurses, vets; imaging touches everyone at some point in the workflow.”
In many practices, imaging knowledge becomes siloed. “Imaging people" becomes the practice's "go-to" solution, while others consequently avoid the procedures. IMV imaging actively works to break that cycle by involving entire teams in training, audits, and conversations about confidence.
When everyone feels comfortable that they have an active and important part to play in imaging procedures, and how they can play that part successfully, imaging becomes less intimidating and far more effective.
Audits are a good thing
For many vets, the word audit triggers an instinctive sense of dread. But Hannah Eastwood Yeates, Head of UK Account Management and vet by background, sees diagnostic imaging audits very differently.
“They’re actually a brilliant opportunity,” she says. “Imaging sits at the crossroads of medicine and surgery, across every species. When you audit imaging, you’re really looking at the heartbeat of the clinic.”
An imaging audit isn’t about blame or box-ticking. It’s about asking practical questions:
- What equipment do we have, and does it actually work as it should?
- Who feels confident using it and who doesn’t?
- How are images stored, shared, and protected?
- Are workflows clear and consistent?
- Are we charging appropriately for the service we provide?
When done collaboratively, audits bring clarity, reduce stress, and often unlock immediate improvements, sometimes with surprisingly small changes.
Technology is moving fast, and support matters more than ever
From portable, battery-powered X-ray units in the field to ultrasound probes that connect directly to mobile phones, the capabilities of veterinary imaging today rival those in human healthcare.
AI, cloud-based image sharing, and advanced post-processing tools are already here, not in the distant future.
But technology alone doesn’t solve problems.
“What matters is applying it responsibly,” Hannah notes. “And making sure teams feel confident using it, understanding it, and trusting it.”
That’s where IMV imaging sees its role: helping practices adopt new tools without fear, supporting ethical and effective use of AI, and strengthening collaboration across the profession.
Small changes, big relief
When asked what single change practices could make to improve imaging, the IMV imaging team didn’t hesitate.
Block out time. Sit down together. Be honest. Ask for help.
“Two hours spent reviewing your imaging honestly can change everything,” Amy says. “You’d be amazed how much stress disappears when people understand their equipment and feel supported.”
IMV imaging’s message is clear: there is no judgment, no “you should already know this.” Just partnership, curiosity, and progress.
Imaging that works for real life
At its core, IMV imaging’s philosophy is refreshingly human. Imaging isn’t about perfection. It’s about practicality, confidence, and knowledge.
When veterinary teams feel supported, they use imaging more effectively. When imaging workflows make sense, patient care improves. And when people stop feeling alone with complex technology, the entire practice benefits.
About IMV imaging
IMV imaging works with veterinary teams across the UK to improve diagnostic imaging through education, workflow support, audits, and long-term partnership, not just equipment sales. Their human-centred approach ensures imaging fits the realities of veterinary practice, helping teams feel confident, supported, and effective.
